Old timer in Denver told me to stop using Teflon tape on gas lines
Guy I met at a supply house, been doing this 30 years. Said I was wasting time and risking leaks. Switched to pipe dope on all my gas fittings. Three months in, did a leak test on a range install I did back in April. Zero bubbles. He was right. Anyone else ditch tape for dope on gas?

That 30-year guy in Denver might’ve just gotten used to dope on his own jobs, but I've had the opposite luck with tape. I put a new line in over in Aurora last month for a water heater, and I used tape plus a thin layer of dope on the threads, which a lot of old timers swear by. Tape alone can shred if you don't wrap it right, but if you do three or four solid wraps and tighten it proper, I've never seen a bubble. Maybe his leak test was just on a brand new fitting, which is way easier to seal than an old rusty one. I mean, I’m not saying dope is bad, but calling tape a waste of time feels off to me.
