Old timer told me to ditch my multimeter and trust my nose on a 20 year old fridge last Tuesday

I was chasing a dead short on a Frigidaire side-by-side in El Paso and this guy I barely knew walked in, said stop poking at wires and just smell the compressor, and sure enough the burnt oil stink saved me 3 hours of probing, has anyone else had a seasoned repair guy hit you with a weird piece of advice that actually worked?

Oh man, that's gold... I had an old guy tell me to lick the battery terminals once and sure enough that worked.
