A professor's note made me stop scrubbing pottery sherds so hard

After 3 years of cleaning every piece with a toothbrush and water, a dig supervisor in Wyoming told me I was stripping the patina that helps with dating. Now I just dry brush and bag them, and honestly the lab results come back way clearer. Anyone else get told to ease up on cleaning and have it change their whole process?
