A volunteer at the dig in Tucson handed me a bamboo skewer and I rolled my eyes, then it saved a whole afternoon
I was brushing a wall section at a site outside Tucson when a volunteer with 20 years in the field said to ditch the trowel and use a bamboo skewer for the last half inch of dirt. I figured it was busywork, but the skewer caught the edge of a bone fragment the trowel would have sliced right through. Does anyone else keep a stash of skewers in their kit, and what else am I missing?
The part about ditching the trowel for the last half inch is real. A buddy of mine worked a shelter site in the Mojave and a skewer is how he found a bead that a trowel would've popped right out of the dirt. His whole crew carries them now, along with cheap chopsticks and a cut-up credit card for scooping.
