Ditch the trowel for a paint scraper on dry dirt, like, yesterday

I used to bust out a full Marshalltown trowel for every dig grid, even in super compacted soil. It would take me forever to scrape clean and I kept hitting the same level line, so my context readings were always off. Last month at a site near Flagstaff I tried a flat 2-inch paint scraper I grabbed from the hardware store, and it worked way better on the dry clay. The stiff blade keeps a flat angle so I get a smooth surface in like 10 minutes instead of 40. Has anyone else tried non-standard tools for leveling, or is that just a desert thing?

Paint scrapers are fine, but 10 minutes saved ain't changing your career.
