My professor told me to ignore the surface scatter and focus on the grid squares near the riverbank at our dig in Kentucky, which is how we found a cache of 17 intact Mississippian pottery vessels.
Has anyone else had a hunch from a senior archaeologist pay off in a big way like that?

My advisor once said to dig by the big rock. Found a burial.

Yeah, but @leotaylor, that's not just a hunch, it's pattern recognition.

Man, I was totally a "follow the data" guy before something like this. My old crew chief told me to check a weird soil color patch everyone else wrote off. Turned out to be a posthole pattern for a whole structure. Just like @the_fiona and the big rock, you gotta listen to that experience sometimes. It completely changed how I look at a site now.
