Paid $40 for a replica amphora shard, got scammed at a flea market

Picked up what the seller swore was a Roman amphora handle at a flea market outside Austin last month, paid $40 cash, and it turned out to be a modern terracotta pot handle with fake weathering. The museum curator I showed it to laughed for a solid minute before confirming it was probably from a garden center in Oklahoma. Has anyone else gotten burned buying artifacts from flea market vendors, or do you have a rule for spotting fakes on the spot?
