Pro tip: Count the layers in a strata cut. Hit 47 in one spot near Moab.
I was out on a site near Moab last spring. Just a hobby dig, nothing official. Started counting the layers in one canyon wall. Got to 47 distinct strata before the light changed. That many layers in one spot tells you the landscape shifted a crazy number of times. Floods, droughts, volcanic ash. It really put time in perspective. Has anyone else ever counted layers like that and been surprised by the number?

Whoa, yeah, I've done that same thing out in the desert. Tbh, I got to 52 in a wash near there once and just had to stop because my neck got sore. It's wild how each one of those thin lines represents a whole different moment in time, like a flood or a dry spell. Really makes you feel small, you know?
