Serious question, why does everyone call any old pottery shard 'Roman'?
I was at a garage sale last weekend in Phoenix and this guy had a box of random pottery pieces. He was dead serious telling me they were 'Roman artifacts from the 2nd century.' I looked at them and they were clearly Native American Hohokam pottery, probably 1100-1400 AD. The clay was different, the design was different. I didn't say anything but come on. I'm no expert but I've seen enough digs online to know the difference. Why do people jump to Roman for everything old? Is it just easier to sell that way or do they really not know? Has anyone else run into this?
