Spotted a 500 year old pottery shard sticking out of a creek bank near the Cahokia Mounds last Sunday
I was just walking along the trail and saw this piece of clay with a faint zigzag pattern poking out of the mud, and after asking a ranger about it, they said it was likely Mississippian cooking ware from around 1400 AD - has anyone else stumbled across artifacts in random places like that?

There's a drainage ditch near my apartment complex where the city had to do some sewer work a few years ago. After they dug it up and before they repaved, I found a 1950s soda bottle and what looked like an old horseshoe. Kind of makes you realize how much history is just sitting there under our feet. We walk over it every day without thinking.

Jeez, I don't know. I mean it's a soda bottle and a hunk of rusted iron, not buried treasure. People act like finding a
old bottle is some kind of spiritual experience. It's probably just trash that sat there for fifty years. Not everything under our feet is some deep historical moment. Sometimes it's just garbage that didn't get picked up. I wouldn't read too much into it.
