Was helping with a dig near Tucson and the lead archaeologist told me to always check the spoil pile twice.
Found a tiny turquoise bead everyone else walked past. How many small finds get missed like that?

Rain washes the dirt right off the turquoise, makes them pop like crazy against the brown.

That spoil pile advice is gold! My uncle found a coin in one years later.

That's awesome about your uncle. Honestly, checking spoil piles is a solid move. I had good luck just after a decent rain, stuff gets washed clean and is easier to spot. Patience is key though, you gotta really look at the ground.
