DAE figure out you were asking locals the totally wrong way at the farmers market?
So I've been going to the Saturday market in my town for like 3 years and always asking vendors 'what's good?' which just gets me a shrug and 'it's all good.' Last month a lady at the bread stand in Madison finally clued me in. She goes 'honey, ask me what's left from last week and what came in this morning, that's how you get a straight answer.' Turns out when you ask 'what's good' they think you want the sales pitch, but asking 'what came in today' makes them actually tell you the truth. I tried it at the cheese guy next and he pointed me to a 6 dollar wedge he said would be gone by noon, way better than the 14 dollar one he pushes on tourists. Same thing at the fish tent, the guy showed me which tray was from yesterday just because I asked the right thing. Now I get actual answers instead of the same script. Anyone else got a go-to line that gets locals to drop the sales voice and just talk straight?
