Found a shortcut for getting local restaurant recs that actually works
I kept getting bad suggestions from Yelp for places near me in Portland... everything was overpriced or touristy. So I started searching Reddit and filtering by city name and "best kept secret" and found a post from 2 years ago about a ramen spot. Went there last week and it was amazing... barely any line. Has anyone else found a weird search trick that beats the big review sites?

That ramen spot in Portland - which one was it? I've lived here for 5 years and most of the "hidden gem" posts I find on Reddit turn out to be places that are already packed by 6pm on a Tuesday. Honestly I think you just got lucky with the timing. The whole "best kept secret" angle is kind of played out by now, too many people fishing for upvotes with that phrasing. Your mileage may vary but I'd take those old posts with a grain of salt unless the user has actual food pics or a detailed review history.
