Hot take: Asking random locals beats Google Maps reviews every time

I needed a good taco spot in Portland last weekend and Google said some place was 4.5 stars. Three people at a bus stop told me to go somewhere else instead and it was way better. Has anyone else found locals give way more honest tips than the review apps?

Used to trust Google reviews but a random guy at a laundromat proved me wrong.

Man that laundromat guy probably saved you from some overpriced spot with fake 5 star reviews. @andrew916 I just filter by recent and look for the 3 star ones now, those tend to be the most honest. If someone bothers to write a whole paragraph about a place it's usually either a paid review or a genuine complaint worth listening to.
