I asked a local in Rome for a pizza place and got the best meal of my trip

My first night there, I just walked into a spot with a big English menu and pictures of the food. It was fine, but nothing special. The next day, I was lost near Trastevere and asked an older man where he gets his pizza. He pointed me to this tiny place with no sign, just a red door. I got a simple margherita for 8 euros. The crust was thin and chewy, the sauce tasted like fresh tomatoes, and the basil was actually on top, not cooked into the sauce. It was a totally different experience from the tourist trap. The local knew about the quality, not just the location. Has anyone else had a meal completely change because you asked a specific question to someone who lives there?

That "best meal" feeling usually just means you were really hungry.

That's a fair point. But what about meals that are objectively great? Can't a person tell the difference between "hungry brain" and actual good food?
