I keep seeing people ask locals for restaurant tips on huge city subreddits...
It drives me nuts when someone posts 'Visiting Chicago next month, where should I eat?' in a sub with 200,000 people. You get the same ten famous spots every time. I found my favorite taco place by asking in a tiny neighborhood Facebook group for Pilsen. The difference was night and day. Do you think hyper-local groups are always better, or do the big forums have their place?

Big forums are like asking a random guy on the street, and that guy is usually me giving bad directions.

Yeah, that "random guy giving bad directions" bit is too real, @sam_anderson. I've followed forum advice that felt like being told to turn left into a lake. It's a whole vibe of confident wrongness.

What was the worst advice you ever got?
