My neighbor in Phoenix mentioned they always ask the hotel front desk for the best local dive bar, never the concierge.
They said the concierge gets kickbacks for sending tourists to overpriced spots, but the night staff will give you the real answer after their shift ends.

Wait, the night staff gives you the real answer after their shift ends? That's the wild part. So you're just supposed to hang around the lobby at 3 AM hoping they'll talk to you? I tried that once in Denver and got security called because I looked like a weirdo loitering by the elevators. That advice only works in movies.

Honestly that Denver story sounds about right. Most night staff just want to finish their shift and go home, not give secret tips. Where did this idea even come from?

The trick is to not hang around the lobby, go to the bar instead if they have one. The night audit guy comes down for a smoke break around 2:30 usually, that's when you catch them. I just say "rough shift?" and let them vent, usually they'll drop some solid advice if you don't act like you're expecting some secret handshake. Did you try the bar approach or just awkwardly stand by the elevators?
