Overheard a guy trashing laminate flooring at the hardware store

He said real wood is the only way to go for any room. I've had laminate in my kitchen for 6 years now and it still looks great, even with two dogs and a spilled pot of chili. Anyone else think that snobbery goes too far?

Once I was that guy, no joke. I used to think laminate was just cheap plastic pretending to be wood, and I'd probably have said the same stuff to anyone who'd listen. Then my buddy put some high quality laminate in his rental and it survived a full on puppy potty training disaster without even swelling. That chili story is exactly the kind of test that real wood would fail if you didn't sand and refinish it, so yeah, the snobbery is way out of hand. Honestly, for kitchens and busy homes, laminate is way more practical than most people want to admit.

Man, I had a buddy who put laminate in his kitchen right before his kid went through that phase where they figure out how to open the fridge and just start chucking stuff. Whole jug of grape juice exploded on the floor, sat there for hours while he was at work. By the time he got home it was a sticky purple lake. He just mopped it up and it looked brand new. No stain, no swelling, nothing. He still talks about that day like it's a miracle.
