Overheard someone at a diner say they never read ingredient labels on their skincare

I was at a local diner last Tuesday and heard a woman tell her friend she just buys whatever bottle looks nice for her face cream. She had no clue about stuff like parabens or sulfates. How do you all figure out what ingredients actually matter without getting lost in the jargon?
