Question about a weird local tip that actually worked
I was doing a job in Spokane last week and a homeowner told me to check out this old diner for lunch, saying to ask for the 'off-menu' burger. I was pretty sure it was just a line, but I went in and asked the server about it. She smiled and brought out this huge burger with fried pickles on it that wasn't on the menu board anywhere. It was the best lunch I've had in a while. Do you guys ever get tips like that from locals that turn out to be real?

Always trust the local tip, especially from someone who lives there. Those off-menu items are usually how the regulars eat, and the kitchen makes them right. I've found the best food that way, from a chili dog at a gas station to pie at a truck stop diner. You just have to be willing to ask and not look at the posted menu as the only option. It's the easiest way to eat well on the road.

Got a similar tip at a truck stop outside Boise once, told to order the "roadhouse scramble." It was just eggs and hash browns with their special spicy sausage mixed in, but man it hit the spot. The real trick is if the person giving the tip looks like they actually eat there, it's probably legit. Servers usually give a little nod or smile when you ask for the secret stuff, that's how you know you're good.
