Serious question, I used to think asking locals on forums was pointless until a 3 hour mess in Cleveland changed my mind
I used to skip the whole "ask the locals" thing because I figured every answer would just be "it depends" or someone pushing their cousin's shop. Last Saturday I was trying to find a good spot for a cheap brake job near Cleveland and wasted almost 3 hours calling places that were either closed or wanted $400 more than the dealer quote. Out of frustration I posted in a local Facebook group and had 4 solid answers in 15 minutes, including one guy who named a shop on Lorain Ave that did it for $120 less than anywhere else I called. That is when I admitted my whole "forums are just noise" view was wrong. The trick was asking a specific question with my actual budget and car model instead of a vague "where should I go." Has anyone else had a local board save them a whole afternoon of guesswork on something like this?
