Showerthought: Realized I had the wrong approach to backcountry permits after a trip to Yosemite last fall
I spent 3 days planning a route through the backcountry near Tuolumne Meadows, only to get turned away at the ranger station because I didn't check the lottery system. The ranger explained they release 40% of permits day-of at 8 AM, not online weeks ahead like I assumed. Now I always show up early and grab a walk-up permit instead of stressing about reservations months out.

Honestly, that day-of walk-up system is a total game changer once you figure it out but I'm curious how early you actually have to get there for a popular trailhead like Tuolumne? Like were people camping out overnight or did showing up at 6 AM still get you a spot? Ngl I've heard some horror stories about folks lining up before dawn and still getting shut out.

How many people were in your group when you tried the walk-up system? I went with two friends last July and we got to the ranger station at 4 AM for Tuolumne, and there were already like 15 people ahead of us in line. We barely snagged a permit for Cathedral Lakes. I keep hearing solo hikers have way better luck since they only need one spot.
