The trick that finally made asking locals work: I started asking the people who work there, not the ones who live there
I used to post in travel groups before every trip and get the same five tourist spots back, so I changed how I ask. Instead of asking random people online what to do in a city, I started asking the staff at my hotel, the guy at the rental car counter, and the cashier at a grocery store, and I started saying I have two free hours, what would you do if you lived here. In Spokane a hotel clerk pointed me to a taco truck behind a laundromat, and it beat every place I'd read about online. Her tip was so good I asked her how she knew it, and she said she eats there twice a week, which is the whole point. People who live somewhere and work with the public know the real spots, they just never get asked in a way they can answer fast. I'm convinced the whole ask the locals thing only works if you give a time limit and a real person, not a comment section. Curious if anyone else has tried the two hours and what would you do angle, or do you just trust the replies you get online?
How do you bring it up without it feeling like you're pumping them for info? I've tried the whole "what would you do with two hours" thing and half the time I get a shrug or some chain place they think I want to hear. Do you lead with the time limit right away or ease into it after some small talk? And does it change anything when the person is clearly slammed at work versus just standing around?
