TIL I hit 1,000 days of asking locals for recommendations and it actually changed how I travel
I was scrolling through my old posts here and noticed I've been doing the ask the locals thing for almost 3 years now. For me it started when I was planning a trip to Portland and kept getting generic advice from blogs and travel sites. So I posted here asking about where actual locals eat and stuff. The responses were way more honest and specific than anything I found online. Now I basically use this sub as my go to before any trip. It's saved me from a bunch of tourist traps. Has anyone else noticed their travel style shifting after using this community for a while?

Wait, is that actually 1,000 days or did you maybe count weekends twice? I checked my own history and it's closer to 800 days of asking for recs here, and I'm pretty obsessive about it. Still, you're right that the advice here is way better than most travel blogs.

You're right to question my math, Olivia. I honestly used to roll my eyes at people who swore by forum advice over blogs or influencers. I figured blogs had better photos and more polished itineraries, so they must be better. But after following this sub for a while, I had to admit I was wrong. The real life experiences and honest feedback here have saved me from some pretty bad travel mistakes. Now I check here first before I even look at a blog. What was the tipping point that made you trust this place over the blogs?
