Trusted a local's shortcut for the harbor bridge walk, nearly missed the ferry

A guy at the coffee shop swore the back stairs behind the fish market cut 20 minutes off the route to the terminal, so I followed his directions. Turns out that stairwell locks at 6pm and I had to double back through three blocks of construction, barely caught the 7:15 boat. Anyone else get burned by a 'locals only' tip that was totally outdated?
