Update: The lady at the Ace Hardware told me to try a $7 fix before calling a plumber

She said to put a new wax ring on the toilet, not replace the whole flange. I figured she was just trying to sell me something cheap, but I went along with it. Turns out she was 100% right. Saved me about $300 and a whole day of tearing up the floor. Has anyone else had a hardware store employee give advice that actually solved your problem better than the expensive route?

Wax rings are a pain to scrape off if you mess up. But yeah, that lady knew her stuff. Had a guy at my local hardware store once talk me through fixing a squeaky garage door with just some lithium grease. Would have cost me a fortune to get someone out there. Those part-time retired guys working the aisles are usually gold mines of practical know-how.

Had a guy at the local True Value talk me out of buying a whole new garbage disposal unit. He just told me to reset the little button on the bottom and save myself $150. Your mileage may vary, but those older hardware store folks have usually seen it all and know what actually works first.
