Heard a photographer argue that editing deep space shots is basically cheating
One side says it's just data processing to show what's there, the other says it creates a false image. I saw a raw Andromeda file that looked like a gray smudge before editing. Where do you draw the line between enhancing and inventing?

Totally get where you're coming from. I mean, that raw file is just sensor data, right? It's not like they're adding stars that aren't there. They're pulling out details the camera already caught but our eyes can't see. The line for me is when you start changing the real structure of things, like making a nebula a shape it isn't. But boosting color and contrast just feels like developing the photo, like old darkroom stuff.

Wait, that darkroom comparison is spot on. But even film photographers dodged and burned to change how things looked. The real line is intent. Are you trying to show the data clearly, or make a pretty picture that's not real? Like turning a faint nebula neon pink just because it looks cool. That's inventing.
