Just got back from Death Valley and saw a whole parking lot of people shooting the Milky Way with phones

Stood at the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes around 11pm and counted maybe 30 people holding phones on tripods instead of actual cameras. Is this the new normal for night sky shots, or are people just doing it for the quick social media post?
