My brother told me to stop using the kit lens for the Milky Way
He said to get a cheap 50mm f/1.8 prime instead, even though it's fixed. I tried it last night from my backyard in Tucson. The difference was huge, way more stars and detail. Has anyone else made a simple lens swap that gave you a big jump in quality?

Totally get that. Swapped the kit lens on my old camera for a cheap 35mm prime just to try it, and it was like wiping fog off a window. Suddenly all my indoor shots of my dog weren't a blurry mess. Makes you realize how much glass matters, even on a basic setup. Your brother gave you solid advice.

Remember that exact feeling when I first tried a prime lens. My old kit lens made everything look sort of flat and dull, especially in my dim apartment. Switched to a nifty fifty and suddenly my cat's fur had actual texture you could see, not just a fuzzy blob. It's crazy how a simple lens swap can wake up an old camera body.

Ever notice how this happens with everything? Like ryanprice said, you get used to the foggy window and don't even know it's there. Same with cheap headphones making music sound thin, or a bad monitor washing out colors. You settle for "good enough" until you try the better thing once. Then you can't go back.
