Did you read that piece in the Atlantic last fall about light pollution in national parks? They mentioned how phone screens mess with your eyes' night vision for up to 30 minutes after one glance. I've started using a red light headlamp at night when I'm out camping, and it makes a huge difference in how much detail I can see in the stars. The ranger probably sees people pulling out their phones all the time, ruining their own view and everyone else's too.

Guilty as charged here. I once spent a solid 15 minutes fumbling with my phone to get a good photo of the Milky Way, then looked up and realized I'd basically blinded myself and missed half the show. My wife still brings it up. Now I keep my phone buried in my bag and just use a cheap red bike light clipped to my jacket. Your mileage may vary but it's way easier on the eyes and I don't feel like a total tourist anymore.
