Shoutout to the backyard trick that finally got my Andromeda shot sharp
My stars kept trailing every time I shot from my driveway in Reno, even at 30 seconds. Turned out my tripod was sitting on the concrete pad next to the garage, and every time the water heater kicked on, the whole slab hummed just enough to smear things. I moved the rig onto the grass 15 feet away, put a 5 lb sandbag on each leg, and suddenly I pulled 90 second subs with round stars. Anyone else deal with vibration from stuff in the house messing up their subs?
My neighbor's pool pump did the same thing to me last summer. I was set up on my patio shooting the Veil Nebula and could not figure out why half my subs had this weird oval star shape. Drove me nuts for two weeks before I noticed the pump kicked on at 9pm every night like clockwork. Moved my rig to the other side of the yard behind a shed and the problem vanished. Now I check what is running in the house before I even set up. Water heaters, AC units, even the fridge compressor can send just enough shake through the floor to ruin a good sub.
