That $600 telescope I almost returned after one bad night

Tbh, my first night with my new 8-inch dob was a total mess. I couldn't even find Jupiter, let alone focus on it. A guy at the local star party in Austin told me to just leave it outside for 30 minutes to cool down, and that made all the difference. Next night I saw the bands on Saturn clear as day after doing that. Has anyone else had a simple tip like that save them from a bad first impression with a scope?

I read somewhere that a lot of people give up on a new scope after one bad night, which is a shame. The cool down tip is huge, I had the same thing with my 6-inch reflector. Another thing that helped me was using a cheap 25mm eyepiece to find stuff first before switching to a higher power one. Just going slow and giving the gear a chance to work made all the difference.

Ngl the low power eyepiece trick is clutch but something people really sleep on is collimation. Everyone talks about cooling down the scope but if your mirrors are even slightly off, you'll never get sharp views no matter how long you wait. I had a buddy who almost sold his dob after a month of fuzzy images and it was just a tiny tweak needed on the secondary mirror. Honestly spend like 10 bucks on a cheshire collimator and it might save you from quitting entirely.
