That 'let the camera warm up' advice saved my aurora shots in Fairbanks

A retired astrophotographer at a roadside diner told me to leave my DSLR outside for 20 minutes before shooting in 10 degree weather, and I thought he was crazy. The difference in star sharpness between my first and second set of photos last January was night and day, no frost fog at all. Has anyone else tried this trick or do you just rely on lens heaters?

Did your buddy leave his lens cap on too, or just the camera?
