Clearcoat peeled like sunburn after 2 weeks, my fault entirely
Last spring I finished a fender repair on a 2010 Camry in Tacoma, sprayed the clearcoat and let it cure in the booth overnight. Customer picked it up happy, then came back 14 days later with the clear lifting around the edges of the blend. I checked my records and realized I had thinned the clear with a hardener that was past its date, I bought it off a buddy for cheap. That stuff looked fine in the cup but went bad once it hit the panel, cracked and peeled like a bad sunburn. I stripped it down to bare metal and resprayed the whole fender with fresh materials, ate about $180 in product and two evenings of labor. Now I write the batch number on the tape with the date and I never use anything older than six months. Has anyone else gotten burned by old hardener or catalyst, or am I the only one who tries to save a few bucks that way?
