Debate: Paint matching by eye vs using a spectrophotometer

I was talking to this old timer at the paint supplier yesterday and he swore he could match any metallic just by looking at it. He showed me a silver Toyota he eyeballed perfect, but then I remembered spending 2 hours on a Honda that came out wrong with the same method. Which do you guys trust more when a customer is watching?

Who's paying me, the customer watching or my time? lol I'd trust my eye over a machine that needs calibration every week, but maybe that's just the old timer in me coming out.

Switched to a laser level for hanging cabinets and never looked back. It saved me more time than I wasted recalibrating because I wasnt redoing crooked lines. Your eye is good until the customer stands three feet away and spots a tilt you missed.
