Is that old timer someone who's been doing this since before high build primer was a thing? @danieltaylor nailed it with that take, because chasing perfection just means you'll burn out before you get half the truck bed finished. I've got a buddy who detail buffs every single drip of a 20 year old ford until it's mirror smooth, but then he runs out of time to actually finish prep on the next job. The trick is knowing where "good enough" stops and "this will fail in six months" starts. You gotta protect the metal and get a solid base, but obsessing over a tiny scratch that nobody but you can see is just wasted hours. How do you figure out that line for yourself without screwing up a paid job?
