Realized I was sanding everything wrong after a chat with an old-timer in Detroit

For like 5 years I was using 80-grit on every dent and scratch, thinking rougher meant faster. Then a guy at a shop near Dearborn saw me working and said I was just creating more work for myself with deep scratches. Switched to 180-grit for the rough stuff and it actually cut my prep time in half. Anyone else learn a basic trick way later than they should have?

Oh man, same here. I was out there with 80-grit thinking I was a genius, just absolutely shredding wood until a buddy grabbed my wrist like I was about to hurt myself. Switched to 120 and felt like I unlocked a secret level of woodworking.

Started using 120-grit as my go-to and it changed everything.
