TIL you can spray clearcoat too thick on purpose to fix orange peel

I kept wet sanding and buffing panels with perfect preps only to get orange peel back. Turns out a heavy final coat gives you more material to level out flat.

My buddy tried this on his motorcycle tank and ended up with a run that looked like a tear rolling down its face. Had to strip the whole thing and start over. He still brings it up three years later anytime someone mentions painting anything. Turns out there's a fine line between "heavy coat" and "whoops thats a drip.

Three years later and I bet that bike still catches a glare and your buddy goes quiet for a second. I've got a buddy who tried the "one heavy wet coat" trick on a lawn tractor hood and ended up with a drip that looked like melted cheese dripping off a burger. We still call him "Cheese Coat" to this day, it never gets old. Maybe the secret is to just spray it on like you're apologizing to the paint, thin and scared.
