Am I the only one who thinks dealer-specific scan tools are overrated?

After a $3000 Snap-on scanner failed to pull a code on a 2015 F-150 at a shop in Phoenix last month, my buddy swore by his $200 Autel knockoff and I'm wondering if we're all getting ripped off by the big names, what's your go-to tool?

Had a buddy who works at a shop in Tucson. He dropped two grand on a Matco scanner that wouldn't even talk to a old Dodge Cummins. He borrowed his coworker's $150 Chinese model and it read everything perfect in like five seconds flat. He was so pissed he ended up selling the Matco on eBay for half what he paid. Now he just runs a cheap Bluetooth one with a tablet. Honestly these high end brands are just selling you the name at this point.

That Matco story hits close to home man... I watched my neighbor drop nearly three grand on a Snap-On scan tool and it couldn't even pull codes on his 2001 Ford 7.3. He spent an hour on the phone with support and they basically told him tough luck. Meanwhile my cousin had this $120 Autel from Amazon that hooked up in seconds and even showed live data on the injectors. Your buddy's not wrong about the Bluetooth setup either. I run a cheap OBDLink adapter with an old iPad and it does everything I need for way less than those truck brand guys spend on their monthly payments. The whole tool truck thing feels like a racket sometimes.

Can't believe your buddy actually sold his Matco on eBay after that, @cora400. That's a rough hit to take, like a thousand dollar lesson in brand loyalty. I'd probably keep it as a paperweight just to remind myself not to buy the fancy stuff again. His cheap Bluetooth and tablet setup is probably smarter than half the guys I know spending big on tool trucks.
