Heard a guy at the parts counter say torque specs are just a suggestion

Was picking up brake pads in Tulsa last Tuesday and this older tech in front of me was arguing with the counter guy about a caliper bracket bolt. Said he's been doing brakes for 30 years and never once used a torque wrench on those, just gudda-tight. I laughed at the time but then thought about it. Most of us probably have that one bolt we always skip torquing. Mine was lug nuts for years until I had a wheel wobble at 70 mph on the Turner Turnpike. Scared me straight. Different situation though, bracket bolts vs lug nuts. I still follow the book now but I get the temptation. What's the one fastener you guys absolutely never skip torquing, and what's the one you secretly always eyeball?
