My tire machine told me to slow down and I hated it
I had a conversation with an old fleet mechanic at a parts counter in Sacramento last Tuesday. He watched me complain about a corroded lug nut and said I was fighting the car instead of working with it. That hit different because I realized I treat every job like a race against the clock, not a puzzle to solve. He told me he budgets 45 extra minutes per job just for unexpected rust or stripped threads. Since then I stopped rushing torque specs and started double checking my impact settings. Has anyone else had a mentor moment from a random guy at the counter that actually stuck with you?

That story about the old fleet mechanic in Sacramento really got me. I had a similar moment with a retired diesel guy at a Napa counter in Oregon who talked me out of throwing a whole alternator in the trash, turned out it was just a bad ground wire. He had this calm way of explaining things that made me realize I was my own worst enemy in the shop.
