Pro tip: A dab of dish soap on stubborn freeze plugs will seat them smooth every time.
After fighting a 1-1/2 inch plug in a 350 block for 45 minutes with a socket, tried it on a hunch and it slid right in without a single burp.

Jumped on that trick a few years back with a stubborn freeze plug in a Chevy 305. Tried beating it in for what felt like forever, dab of Dawn and it went in like butter. Your mileage may vary but it's been in my toolbox ever since.

Tried beating it in for what felt like forever" yeah that's the problem right there. You should be using a proper driver tool and not forcing it with a hammer in the first place. That dab of soap might let it slide in now but it'll probably work itself loose later when the engine gets hot and starts vibrating.
