Rant: I think dealer-only scan tools are overrated for most jobs

Last month I spent $600 on a Snap-On scanner for my shop, and honestly my $200 Autel does 90% of the same stuff. At Indy Auto on a 2018 Ford F-150 last week, the Snap-On couldn't even pull a specific module code that the Autel caught. Am I missing something, or are we just paying for the name?

Got a similar Autel (the MS906TS) a couple years back, and it's been a lifesaver for stuff like that. Used it last month on a Chevy Silverado where the Snap-On Vantage couldn't communicate with the transmission module at all, and the Autel read it no problem (weird, right?). The dealer tools have their place if you're doing heavy programming or key coding on specific makes, but for 90% of diagnostic work, the midrange stuff is totally fine. Honestly, I think the name tax on Snap-On is real, and you're not missing a thing by sticking with Autel.
