Showerthought: My wife said her old Civic felt 'smoother' after I just rotated the tires, not did an alignment.
Ngl, it made me realize how much of our job is managing customer perception versus actual mechanical correction, and I'm curious if other shops have a standard 'feel-good' service they do before a big repair to build trust.

Actually, rotating tires can make a real difference in how a car feels. If one tire was more worn and you moved it to the rear, it can smooth out a front-end vibration she was feeling. It's not just in her head. That said, you're right about perception. I've seen shops do a free multi-point inspection and show the customer the worn parts with their own eyes before any big job. It builds trust because they see the real problem.

Wait, shops actually show you the worn parts for free?

Huh, they do that for free? What kind of shop is that, a dealership or a small place?

@jade271 yeah most places that do free inspections are the big chain shops like Firestone or a dealership. My buddy's uncle swears by the local guy though, he'll show you the worn belts on your alternator and not even charge a dime. It's usually a way to get you in the door for a repair, but if you say no they don't hassle you about it.
