The guy at Napa told me to stop using WD-40 on everything

He said a dry lube would fix my squeaky door hinges better and it's been silent for 3 months now. Has anyone else had a mechanic talk them out of a bad habit?

oh man, i totally feel this. i was the same way with wd-40 on everything until a buddy who restores old cars basically grabbed my arm and said "please stop." i tried that dry lube on a super annoying squeaky closet door and yeah, it's been silent for months now. kinda makes you wonder how many things we've been making worse by just spraying the wrong stuff on them.

My neighbor still uses butter on his door hinges, so I guess it could be worse.

So is your neighbor just using salted butter or unsalted? Because I feel like that makes a difference in the sticky residue situation. Also @camerona79 totally nails it on the wd-40 thing, I swear that stuff is just a temporary bandaid that makes everything worse in the long run once it dries out. Honestly I've found that just taking the hinge pin out and wiping it clean with some soapy water can fix most squeaks without needing any spray at all. Ngl I used to be the butter guy until I realized I was basically seasoning my doors for the critters.
