Unpopular opinion: my old mentor said use the cheap torque wrench, he was half right

My mentor in Tulsa swore the $40 Harbor Freight torque wrench was fine for lug nuts and brake calipers, so I used it for two years. Last month I checked it against a Snap-On digital unit and it was off by 14 ft-lbs at 80. That means I was over-torquing rotors the whole time, but honestly I never had a failure or a comeback. So is he wrong, or is the margin for error just bigger than we admit? Has anyone else seen a cheap wrench cause real damage, or is this mostly a trust thing?
