Update: tried the old trick of tapping a starter with a hammer, it fired right up and I felt like a genius for 10 minutes

Customer's 2004 Civic wouldnt crank in the Advance Auto lot on 5th Street, so I tapped the solenoid and it started first try. Problem is I never told him the real fix, just sent him off and now Im wondering if thats sketchy or just old school, what would you guys have done?
