Vent: Customer handed me a key that was just the plastic head with no metal blade

I was at my shop in Phoenix last Thursday when a guy walks in and gives me a key fob with literally NOTHING attached to it, just the plastic part with chips inside. He said the blade snapped off three days ago and he's been driving around hoping I could fix it. How do you lose your ONLY car key and not notice the metal part is missing for three days?

Man I saw a post about this the other day where someone said their dog ate the metal part of the key. Still can't wrap my head around how you go three whole days without realizing your key is basically just a useless plastic nub.

and honestly the dog story is still somehow less dumb than this guy. Three days of driving around with a plastic nub pretending it's a key is next level denial. Like, did he think the metal part would magically grow back if he just ignored the problem long enough? That's not just being forgetful, that's actively choosing to live in a fantasy world where physics works differently. The real kicker is that he handed it to you expecting a solution, like you're a wizard who can make metal appear out of thin air. At what point during those 72 hours did he not think "hey, maybe I should stop by a locksmith before my key fully gives up"? I'm betting he had a backup key the whole time and just wanted to see what kind of excuse you'd come up with.
