A ranger in Yosemite told me to walk past the crowded campsites, and it saved my whole trip

I was 6 miles in on the Mist Trail loop and every flat spot was taken, so he said keep going another mile up the drainage. Ended up alone by a creek with zero people around, has anyone else scored a site just by pushing further past the obvious spots?
