Appreciation post: the detour that saved my John Muir Trail trip

Tbh I planned this route for like 4 months, down to the marked campsites. Then 3 days in near Evolution Lake the snowpack was way worse than the reports said. I slid about 20 feet on a crossing and soaked my boots. Instead of pushing through to Muir Pass I bailed down to the San Joaquin River trail and took the long way around. Cost me an extra 2 days and 14 miles but I avoided what could have been a real bad spot. Ended up seeing a herd of bighorn sheep that I never would have spotted on the original path. Anyone else ever ditch a plan mid trip and find it made the whole trek better?
